We were fortunate to have the 2016 4R Nutrient Stewardship Farm Tour stop at Hat Trick Farms (our farm) to learn about some of the 4R nutrient placement best management practices we have implemented.  4R Nutrient Stewardship is an innovative approach for fertilizer best management practices.  The concept is simple – apply the right source of nutrient, at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place – but the implementation is knowledge-intensive and site-specific.

Our discussion with the tour group included the following topics:

  • Soil Testing Based on Production Zones
  • Nutrient Mapping for Variable Rate Application of fertilizer
  • In-season Nitrogen testing using 360 SOILSCAN
  • Nitrogen application rate based on Soil Organic Matter, Yield Goal and Crop Growth Stage
  • Nitrogen Fertilizer Placement
    • Coulter Side-dress vs. Y-drop methods

The agricultural industry, government, and conservation authorities in Ontario have all said they are committed to sustainable food production. The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Farm Tour provides a unique opportunity for these three groups, who influence and develop farm policy and regulations, to come together and spend a couple days out in the field learning from farmers about the innovative and practical approaches being used with regards to nutrient stewardship.
